Someone should look before they quote. A figure quoted down the phone by someone who has never set foot in your house is the figure most likely to move once the truck is loaded.

Breakages are rarely bad luck. The same short list of mistakes accounts for most of them, every time: a stone top laid flat instead of stood on edge, a sofa bed that swung open in a doorway, a washing machine whose drum was left free to swing, a carton with enough air in it to collapse under the next one. Knowing the list is what prevents it.

You should be told when you need less than you asked for. A studio on the ground floor with a friend's pickup doesn't need a full crew, and a mover worth using will say so.
What drives what a move costs
Two homes holding identical furniture can be very different jobs. The thing that separates them is how easily your belongings can get from where they sit to where the truck is standing — flights of stairs, the length of that walk, turns that force a piece to be dismantled, a driveway no truck can use. After that comes the volume, whether the boxing is finished, and how much has to come apart.

Common questions
The moment your date is confirmed. Demand clusters hard in this trade: leases turn over at month-end and families move during the school holidays, so those windows go first and go fast. None of that rules out next week — it just leaves you choosing from what's left.
Not always, and it's worth being honest about that — but a single item, one room, or help at just one end of a move you're otherwise doing yourself are all normal bookings. There's no minimum size before it's worth asking.
Either, and most people do a mix. Handing over the kitchen and doing the rest yourself is the most common arrangement there is.
Several things. Nothing flammable, pressurized, or corrosive rides on a truck — that covers fuel, gas bottles, thinners, spray cans, pool and garden chemicals, ammunition and fireworks, so make a plan for those early. Food that spoils and houseplants don't survive the trip either, and pets belong in your car. Keep paperwork, prescriptions, valuables and anything you couldn't replace with you. And where an appliance is plumbed into gas or wired into the wall, a qualified trade has to break that connection and remake it — book them separately.
